He often jumps around alot which makes it kind of hard to understand, but it makes it a way more interesting book. He kind of makes all of his stuff games, for example “ 4 red cars in a row made it a good day, and 5 cars in a row made it a super good day.” (24) He does this so can strive to have a good day when this had happened. He also likes organizing himself.It seems that he is way more organized when he feels comfotable with his likes and dislikes and basses everything off thenstuff he enjoys, “I have decided to give my chapters prime numbers 2,3,5,7,11,13 and so on because I like prime numbers.”(11) I feel like he does this to make himself more comfortable with explaining because its something he likes.

In the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Christopher John Francis Boone is very different from other people with Asperger Syndrome. He is a very detail-oriented person when it comes to school and giving more information. He’s not the person you want to surprise because he gets scared and worried that the same thing is going to happen again within a matter of time. He’s got a memory like a film, which means he also has a photographic memory.
ReplyDeleteThe two quotes I found that demonstrate Christopher’s voice are “I don’t like to be surprised”(Haddon, 82) and “My memory is like a film”(Haddon, 76). Both these quotes say a lot about his personality. With his memory being like a film, he also has a photographic memory. A photographic memory helps people a lot when you need information in important situations. A photographic memory is also helpful with memorization. Christopher doesn’t like to be surprised. it makes him scared and worried that the same thing will happen next time he were to do whatever triggered the surprise again. He is a very detail-oriented person when it comes to school and giving more information to people in important situations.
I think Christopher with being a very detail-oriented person is a very reliable narrator. With giving a lot of information as a narrator, the audience can adjust and not have to go on the internet and read what happened. With being part of the audience while reading a book like this, I’d prefer the narrator to give a lot of information so I know what’s happening. I don’t like when there’s not enough information and I stop at the end of a chapter and don’t know enough information to evaluate what is going on.

In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the character Christopher is very odd and has a very peculiar personality. He is very quiet and shy, loves math and problem solving and is very cautious of his surroundings. Christopher is very odd, which explains why his dislikes are so weird as well. He dislikes certain colors such as brown and yellow, and he will not eat anything if the foods are touching either. Christopher also dislikes other people touching him and even having conversations with strangers because he cannot trust them.
ReplyDeleteChristopher also has a strange relationship with his father. His father has always been there for him, but he can lose his patience with Christophe sometimes. He frequently gets upset with Christopher for doing his detective work. Christopher is a very logical person. He likes everything very straightforward and has a hard-time understanding normal conversations or mannerisms of people. A great example of this is shown on page forty during a conversation between Mrs. Alexander and Christopher about Wellington’s death. After Mrs. Alexander continued the conversation, Christopher says, “I didn’t reply to this either because Mrs. Alexander was doing what is called chatting, where people say things to each other which aren’t questions and answers and aren’t connected” (Haddon, 40). This shows Christopher’s logical, straightforward thinking where everything has to have a meaning and reason. His personality is exemplified greatly her showing his logical and quiet side as well. Christopher is also very cautious of talking to others and interacting with them. After his father found out about his detective work, he told him to stop doing what he is doing and stay out of their business. Christopher could not do this because for him there always has to be an answer in the end. His caution comes in when he frequently mentions, “I was poking my nose into other people’s business and Father said I shouldn’t investigate who killed Wellington” (Haddon, 54). He knows that he must be careful because he also has a hard time with trust. Trust for Christopher only comes from people he has known for a while such as family.
I believe that Christopher is more of a reliable narrator because he is very straightforward and honest. He even mentions the fact that he never tells a lie (which isn’t true because he notes that he tells white lies). Every time he does something or says something, he also explains why he does and his logic or reasoning behind it. This provides a good reason to believe what he is saying, or to why I can trust what he is saying.
In the book the curious incident of the dog in the night-time, the narrator Christopher has a very dynamic personality. He likes things in particular fashions, and he does this so by creating games. One of his games, since he doesn’t like the color yellow, is if there are 4 yellow cars in a row, it is a bad day. If there are 4 red cars, it is a good day. His personality is very different from most boys his age. There are so many thoughts going on his head at one time. For example, he was talking about how chapters are usually cardinal numbers, but he likes prime numbers. He described prime numbers and he said: “This is how you work out prime numbers”(Haddon 11).So he thought of all the prime numbers he knew. Christopher does this a lot throughout the book. His mind is all over the place, but he is very intelligent.
His relationship with other characters such as his father, are very tense. His father is very stressed because he has to control Christopher’s actions and keep in tact. Christopher acts very distant from strangers such as his neighbors. He is very careful when he talks to people he doesn’t know in fear of what they will do to him. I would say he is a reliable narrator even though he has aspergers. He means no harm and truly cares and people and the justice of the murder mystery with Wellington.
When reading “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the night-time” one can not help being blown away by the character of Christopher. Christopher knows all the countries of the world and their capitals, every prime number up to seven thousand fifty seven, and a lot about astronomy. He loves animals and the color red but his problem is he does not understand human emotions. “I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them”(page 8). When Christopher saids this the reader is able to understand the struggles he goes through.Christopher does not like being touched and he hates the color yellow. He likes Siobhan, Mrs. Shears, Mrs. Alexander, and his father. Christopher does not like meeting new people. “No. I don’t talk to strangers. But I’m doing detective work”(page 39). Christopher said this to Mrs. Alexander when he first met her. Christopher is not a reliable narrator because he does not understand human emotions when they are talking to him. He is very smart but he is just a kid and does not have the same wisdom as other characters. Finally as readers we are only hearing his opinion and thoughts.
ReplyDeleteThe Character Christopher is truly a unique person, his personality and talents are like none other. He loves to be alone with his thoughts in a place with no one around. He hates loud noises which could be a factor in why he likes such empty spaces so he can be in complete silence. He also is beyond brilliant in his maths which is probably why he likes it so much. Christopher tells Mrs. Alexander “I am going to A grade maths next month, and I am going to get an A grade”(Haddon 55). A level maths is a high level of math in the country of England so if it was hard to take his word that is a clear indicator. When learning about Christopher it is easy to see he is a unique child he displays great curiosity as well as a love for learning new ideas.
ReplyDeleteChristopher’s relationship with his Father is a little odd, he seems to be very aggressive towards him when trying to lay down the law. Christopher was also lied to about his mother’s death by his father, when in reality the father just said that because she cheated on the him. The Father tells Christopher “Promise me you will give up this ridiculous game right now”(Haddon 50), when al his son is doing is exploring his curiosity. The dad seems to be a little over aggressive with his son Christopher especially considering the fact of his mental disorder and may no Know better.
I think Christopher is not a trustworthy narrator when put into consideration his age as well as his asperger's syndrome can he really be trusted? I think that puts forth a key argument in saying that Christopher can not be trusted, he also can not feel any emotion so there is no way in knowing what he actually feels. When shown a picture of a frowning face Christopher says “I knew that meant sad which is what.” (Haddon 2). When looking at a picture of a frowning face anyone can tell it is sad but most people can also understand what their personal emotions mean so if he doesn't know exactly what he’s feeling at all times then how are we supposed to feel? In the book The Curious Incident of the Dog at Night the main character is a boy named Christopher. Christopher is an average 15 year old boy except that he has Aspergers and is socially awkward around most people. He doesn't like when people touch him and he doesn't like informality in his day, but likes when things are even or consistent. He is a very intelligent boy and is gifted with mathematics and arithmetic but doesn't understand people and their emotions or the way they express themselves. He is not understood well by others and he has an even harder time understanding people he does not know.
Christoper in the story tells us when he doesn't understand something. “Also I don't know what father meant when he says ‘Stay out of other people's business’ because I do not know what he means by ‘other people’s Business’.” “The policeman took hold of my arm and lifted me onto my feet. I didn't like him touching me like this. And that's when I hit him.” These quote prove that Christopher has trouble understanding others and doesn't know how to react in certain situations. I do not believe he is a reliable narrator because he has trouble understanding lots of things in the world so he might have a skewed view of reality.
Christopher is a strange character who faces problems throughout the story. He has Asperger's, a form of Autism, in which he faces challenges of comprehending the entire spectrum of what is going on in his life. Christopher has many likes and dislikes, for example he likes dogs, prime numbers, police officer's, murder mysteries, books, and cake. His dislikes consist of things he does not understand, Mrs. Shears, and being touched.

All his emotions are intensified from his Aspergers. “I didn’t like him touching me like this, And this is when I hit him”(Haddon 8). Christopher hates being touched, the boy keeps to himself. He is like this with all the characters even his own father. “Then he said ‘I strongly advise you to get into the back of the police car, because if you try any of the monkey business again, you little shit, I will seriously lose my rag. Is that understood?’ I walked over to the police car”(Haddon 9). Christopher is very obedient. I believe he is afraid to mess up so he does whatever he can to do good for people. For example he is trying to solve the murder of Mrs. Shears’ dog.
Christopher is a reliable narrator because his Asperger's gives him the inability to lie. Christopher tells the people he is talking to multiple times about how he has never lied. Although it is first person and is seen from his point of view, Christopher does not exaggerate or bend the truth to help his side of the story. He is all about facts, getting to the point even if he goes off track a bit is the only way he knows how to talk.

Because of a condition called Asperger's Syndrome he was born with Christopher has few interactions with others. Christopher does not like people touching him or asking him too many questions. This is clearly described when Christopher says, “I rolled back onto the lawn and pressed my forehead to the ground again and made the noise that father calls groaning. I make this noise when there is too much information coming into my head from the outside world”(Haddon 7). Altho he has trouble taking in too much info at once he has a photogenic memory so once he can process information it stays there forever.
ReplyDeleteAlong with his personality being quite interesting his relationship with some characters is quite peculiar. His relationship with Mrs. Alexander is very close. She developed a friendship with christopher so close that she trusted him not to tell anyone that she told him that his mom cheated on his dad and left. This is discovered after she told him the bad news saying “‘I am not a stranger, Christopher, I’m a friend.’” (Haddon 61). Along with expressing that she is here to talk about anything he needs she also makes him promise not to tell anyone about the info she has just told him. After this conversation his relationship with his mom is quite clear. He does not like her and considers her not part of his life. He also does not like Mr. Shears very much and not because he cheated with him mom it is because he is the lead suspect in the investigation he is performing to find out who killed the dog.
I believe he is not a reliable narrator. He is so involved in him that he forgets to talk about the big picture. His attention to detail helps his be more reliable but if the info is being given to his too fast then he can't process it all. He also doesn't know all the info that a narrator would such as why his mom truly left. Especially in a murder mystery you need both sides of the story so I truly believe that this is an unreliable narrator.
In my opinion, Christopher's personality was upright. He is a person who care about the social status and use special character to use us clearly. And Christopher wrote this book and add infantile autism to the protagonist. It's not just means this teenager have some problems. It has a great effect on the development of the plot. "Usually people look at you when they are talking to you. I know that they are working out what I'm thinking about, but I can't tell what they are thinking"(Haddon 23) Told us in this world different people have different idea about same thing. So, for everyone they have them own world.

In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Christopher expresses a very peculiar personality. He is often very quiet and shy around many people, especially people he isn’t familiar with. Along with Christopher's odd personality, comes different likes and dislikes. For example, he does not like the colors brown and yellow. He won’t even eat foods that are these colors. Christopher does seem to really like school and using his brain. He exceeds in academics and is into doing things such as detective work which involves high level thinking skills. Christopher said, “And after I take A-level maths I am going to take A-level further maths and physics and then I can go to university”(Haddon 45). It is very clear that Christopher is a unique child with his odd likes and dislikes and his personality.

The only characters he ever really talks about are his father, Mrs.Alexander, Mrs.Shears, and Siobhan. His relationship with all these people are very similar. I would say that Christopher is a reliable narrator. HIs Asperger’s Syndrome gives him the inability to tell a lie. Throughout the story, he tells the truth to everyone around him. He mentions multiple times that he always tells the truth and that he does not lie about anything. He also gives facts to back him up when he explains something, even if he steers of topic sometimes. Christopher truly cares about everyone around him and always tries to do what is best. He is very trustworthy and someone I would rely on to tell the truth.

He likes to figure out prime numbers and he dislikes jokes and metaphors, very much because he does not understand them. “The second main reason is that people often talk using metaphors”(Haddon 15). This quote also shows how he is as a character and how it demonstrates his ‘voice’. It shows his voice because it shows how what he likes and dislikes and how he likes to speak about things. He explains everything he talks about. “These are examples of metaphors, I laughed my socks off, He was the apple of her eye, They had a skeleton in the cupboard”(Haddon 15). These quotes reveal about his personality is that he likes things to be a certain way, he does not like jokes, and he does not like metaphors. Christopher also does not like it when people touch him. Christopher wanted the police officer to stop touching him so he hit him, not knowing what else to do, to get the officer to stop touching him.

However, what he is telling us, makes sense. He says what the other people say, and what they are doing while they are talking to Christopher.

ReplyDeleteChristopher is definitely an awesome kid with awesome personalities. Firstable he doesn’t lies, and that is my favorite things about him. “I do not tell lies. Mother used to say that this was because I was a good person” (Haddon 19). He don’t and he can’ tell lies to people, if everyone in this world doesn’t always tell the truth, our lives will be much easier. Secondable he has a brilliant mind that very good observation that can help him figure out how things work in the universe. Haddon wrote “All the other children at my school are stupid”(43). Compare to the other kids in his age, Christopher is much smarter so that he can be the only one in his school that can take A level math. He has an very strong sense on science and math, but supposedly he lake skills on social, philosophical and language skills.
With his difficulties, it look hard for him to interact with other people, and he couldn't see the relationships he has with people. “ ‘I’m scared of being in the park with you because you’re stranger’”( Haddon 61) This is what he said to Mrs. Alexandra when they were in the park. Mrs. Alexandra is a very kind old lady that everyone would love to be with. But Christopher can’t see that, all he knows is that she is a stranger and she could be harmful.
But that doesn’t affect the reliability of narration. Even there are things he couldn’t see with his difficulties with people, but readers can predict what really happened with their own understanding from the highly detailed description In Christopher’s narration.

Christopher is a reliable narrator because he likes to use logic and tells the truth to people. He also notices the little things that may mean a lot in finding something out.
ReplyDeleteIt is almost immediately obvious in the beginning of the book “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” when Christopher the main character is holding a dead dog. When Christopher says “I pulled the fork out of the dog and lifted him into my arms and hugged him. He was leaking blood from the fork holes.”(3) it becomes even more clear that perhaps he is different. Due to his Asperger's he has almost no emotions which helps to explain his sometimes erratic behavior. Christopher enjoys doing math which he excels at and is many levels above his peers. He does not relate well to many people and at times will call them “stupid except that I’m not meant to call them stupid even if that's what they are.”(43) However, despite his inability to relate to people he does make attempts to talk to people in his investigation of who killed the neighbor's dog Wellington.
Christopher is often times talking about himself and what he can do that other people find amazing. One such thing is when he says ”My memory is like a film and I can rewind it when I need to.”(76) Christopher has an excellent ability to remember things that happened to him and on what days, for instance he mentions a specific time on July 4 when they were on a holiday vacation. In general christopher is probably a somewhat reliable narrator. He is most likely always telling the truth or at least the closest thing to it, but he is not very accurate at all times. He will often explain things with his own opinions rather than facts which means their is some variation in his story of what happened and what he is trying to say. His medical condition also plays a large part of his story. He will almost always explain the situation as he sees it and will not show a rationale for his choices such as when he chooses to live with his mother. He never said why he chose to live with her he just kept saying he could not live with father. Altogether he was not an extremely reliable narrator when details were needed but was reliable enough to convey the general storyline.
Christopher is a 15 year old boy who has Aspergers. He is the main character who narrates the book. Because of his Asperger's, Christopher does not liked to be touched. Christopher wants to be an astronaut because then he would have minimal contact with people. He also likes being alone. This is demonstrated when Christopher says, “You also have to be someone who would like being on their own in a tiny space-craft thousands and thousands of miles away from the surface of the earth...And I like really little spaces, so long as there is no one else in them with me”(Haddon 50). Christopher likes being in really small spaces only if he is alone. He is not a very social person. He does not like to talk with unfamiliar people otherwise he will become scared. Christopher loves the color red but hates the colors yellow and brown. “In the bus on the way to school next morning we passed 4 red cars in a row, which meant it was a good day, so I decided not to be sad about Wellington”(Haddon 24). If he passed 4 yellow cars then it would be a black day. Christopher has good days and black days because it was a way to put things into order. He is a very specific and detail-orientated person.
ReplyDeleteChristopher and his father have a strange relationship. His father sometimes gets very upset and angry with Christopher when he does not listen. In the end, his father always finds a way to make up with him. Christopher also has a very good relationship with Mrs. Alexander. Mrs. Alexander is a very friendly lady who talked to Christopher about Mr. Shears and his mother. She was very nice when Christopher asked her about Wellington. Christopher is very curious about Mr. Shears. Overall Christopher is very distant and quiet around people he does not know.
Christopher is a reliable narrator because he cannot lie. He always tells the truth no matter what happens. Also, he does not exaggerate because he does not like to. Christopher explains everything in a very detailed and specific way. The qualities that Christopher possess allows him to be a reliable narrator.

ReplyDeleteIn ‘the curious incident of the dog in the night-time,’ Christopher’s personality is very unique. He is focused and tries to take control of things. An example is how he will not give up on trying to figure out who murdered Mrs. Shears dog, Wellington. Christopher says “I likes dogs because you always know what they are thinking, they are faithful and they do not tell lies because they cannot talk”(Haddon 4). Christopher also says “I do not like strangers because I do not like people i have never met before. They are hard to understand”(Haddon 34). Although Christopher gets off topic real easily, he always finds a way to link it to the main conversation. Christopher is unique because of the way he uses his words or how he creates something out of another thing. An example is when he says “5 red cars made it a Super Good Day and 4 yellow cars made it a Black Day”(Haddon 24).
In my opinion, Christopher is a reliable character because he can tell the truth, and he is a helpful person. Just because other people cannot understand him very well, he can understand them and know how or what they are feeling. He knows what he is talking about and gets to the point even if he has to get to the point of other topics first.
Christopher Boone, who is the main character of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, is a fifteen year old boy living in England with his father. He has a form of autism known as asperger’s syndrome. However, his autism is only one dynamic that makes him who he is, but we are unsure if some of his traits come from the autism or if they are his actual character traits. Right off the bat Christopher lets us know that: “I do not like people shouting at me. It makes me scared that they are going to hit me or touch me and I do not know what is going to happen” (Haddon 4). Along with not liking being yelled at, Christopher, does not like being touched, the colors yellow and brown, and decides how is day will go based on how many certain colored cars he sees. Christopher also states: “I do not tell lies” (Haddon 19). He goes into this topic by talking about his mother telling him good people don’t tell lies, however he states that he is not a good person but that he finds it almost impossible to lie. Christopher loves maths, science, Sherlock Holmes, prime numbers, dogs, and intends to be an astronaut. Some of his behavioral problems include: not talking to people for a long time, not eating or drinking anything for a long time, not noticing that people are angry with him, not smiling, and saying things that other people think are rude.
ReplyDeleteChristopher’s relationships are interesting, to say the least. He lives with his father, who is fully aware of all of his quirks. He is closest to his neighbor, Mrs. Shears, who came and took care of Christopher when his mother died. Besides the two, Christopher is very close to his teacher, Siobhan, who explains concepts to him and helps him understand his feelings. Other than that, Christopher appears to have little to no friends, and is a very independent character despite having autism. He ventures around his neighborhood and speaks to his neighbor Mrs. Alexander but other than that we learn he has problems conversing with strangers, and if he is unsure on what to say to someone he walks away.
Christopher is a reliable narrator for a few reasons, he is unable to lie, and always makes his best attempts to make the feelings of other character’s known. While he does usually get caught up on strange concepts like prime numbers, his story is always sharing his feelings and taking note of his father’s and neighbors are thinking. While we may not know if his ideas on other character’s thoughts are correct, at least he attempts to provide us an explanation, and he usually explains with the most description possible. One setback, however, is that he doesn’t fully understand his emotions or the emotions of others. Christopher will try to understand them, but may never be able to fully understand them.
Christopher is a very interesting character, because of his condition he functions differently from others, which makes the story interesting and engaging. He tells the story how it is and does not spare details. He processes information very differently and tends to remember little details due to his photographic memory. A perfect example of this is when Christopher talks about the approximately 61 holes in Mrs. Alexander’s shoes (Haddon 52). Along with his photographic memory he is also very literal. For example, when his dad tells him that he can not do certain things he does not do those but he finds away around it. Christopher runs through what his dad tells him not to do and decides that chatting with Mrs. Alexander would not be considered against any of those rules (Haddon 56). He also has some other odd things about him which include his dislike of the colors brown and yellow and how those colors can ruin his day or make him have a “black day”, and that he dislikes when different types of food are touching on his plate. Along with these dislikes there are some that will make him more cautious which are that he does not like people touching him or strangers. He doesn’t like strangers because he doesn’t know what their actions mean and they are hard to understand, he also says that they can’t be trusted.
ReplyDeleteHis relationship with strangers would usually be to stay away from them but in order for Christopher to do detective work he must be brave and talk to some people he doesn’t know. He gets uncomfortable with strangers. While talking to Mrs. Alexander he said this, “Mrs. Alexander was doing what is called chatting, where people say things to each other which aren’t questions and answers aren’t connected” (Haddon 40). This shows that Christopher isn’t keen on talking to people, especially strangers, because he thinks it is stupid to talk unnecessarily to people. This goes back to him being a very straightforward, literal person. His relationship with his dad is also a little weird in the book. He loves his dad and his dad loves him but his dad can get very mad at him sometimes. It is hard for Christopher’s dad to handle him sometimes because of his condition. Christopher takes everything his dad says very literally, therefore his dad has to be very specific and careful what he says, which takes a toll on him, and he can sometimes lose his cool.
I believe that Christopher is a very reliable narrator because of his literalness and his straightforwardness. He pays attention to detail and says what he is thinking and says what he sees. I think that his personality makes him reliable even though it is only his opinion. He always tells the truth because he can’t lie.
ReplyDeleteChristopher has special characteristics but not in a bad way, he is just a really careful person who has his likes and dislikes. He has maybe some more than other people but that makes him special, he does not like to be touched or that someone grabs him on his arm, he also does not like to be in a small room with other people especially with people he does not know. Christopher likes specific colors like red and dislike yellow and brown. “I did not look in his face. I do not like to looking at people’s faces, especially if they are strangers”( Haddon 19). Christopher does not like to look at people’s faces because he feels then uncomfortable, and when it is a stranger he get scared, because he things the person is angry.
Christopher is really carefull with other people who he does not know, he is a clever boy and has his rules with building a relationship with other people. “It is like being in France, which is where we went on holiday sometimes when mother was alive, to camp. And I hated it because if you went into a shop or a restaurant or on a beach you couldn't understand what anyone was saying which was frightening.”(Haddon 67.4) Christopher want to say with this that he does not like to speak to people he does not know, because he does not understand what the other person things. When he tries to get closer to a person he first observes the acts of the person, if he or she does something that he does not like. Then he goes to the person if he things it is safe and asks the person many question about this person to find out if he or she is a stranger.
Christopher seems to be a reliable narrator, first of all he tells no lies that means he is telling the truth and he also goes in the closest detail and explains it that everybody knows what he is talking about. When he is talking about something he mostly tells another story to explain the main story.
Christopher Boone is a 15 year old boy who is affected with Asperger's (a high functioning form of autism) in a variety of different ways. Christopher dislikes loud noises, and likes to be alone where he can think. Christopher is brilliant. He excels in mathematics, he tells Mrs. Alexander “I am going to A grade math next month, and I am going to get an A grade”(Haddon 55). This is a very high level of math, one which Christopher's dad had struggled to get him into with the school. Christopher is comforted by uniform and consistency, this was shown when he was arrested, Christopher said. “ I like police.They have uniforms and numbers”(Haddon 6). As you can see Christopher is unique and deals with different likes, and dislikes. He is a very curious boy and is interested in solving the mystery of Wellingtons death.
ReplyDeleteChristopher, continuing on solving the murder of Wellington, he plans to interview his neighbors. Through his encounters with neighbors he first visited the Thompsons. Christopher wouldn’t look at him, he doesn't like looking at people's faces, especially if they are strangers. He also visited the Wise family, Mr. Wise laughed, Christopher doesn't like laughing at him, so her turned and walked away. Christopher has a interesting relationship with his father. His dad is very aggressive and has little patience with Christopher, especially when it comes to trying to solve the murder of Wellington. At one point his father told him, “Promise me you will give up this ridiculous game”(Haddon 50).
I feel that Christopher is not a reliable narrator even though he tells the truth, and is very real with what goes on in his life. I feel that his condition affects him to the point where sometimes judgement and or actions might be overthrown by his feelings causing a unpredictable outcome or turn in events. His actions might be skewed due to difficulties which he undergoes. Even through his brilliant mind, reliability at this point in the story has not yet been established.

ReplyDeleteIn the story of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Christopher Francis Boone is obviously a different person, who has Asperger’s syndrome. He acts, and thinks quite differently than all the other kids his age. He likes animals more than people, and he loves all the sciency things, loves to practice math. Christopher dislikes many things, like the color purple and brown, and he hates being touched or grabbed, and doesn’t like strangers. Christopher is a brainy kind of kid, who loves memorizing things. “This will not be a funny book. I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them.” (Haddon 8) He doesn’t understand jokes, or metaphors or anything similar to that. “My memory is like a film. That is why I am really good at remembering things, like the conversations I had written down in this book, and what people were wearing, and what they smelled like, because my memory has a smelltrack which is like a soundtrack”(Haddon 76) Christopher is good at remembering things, which explains why he is so smart and good at certain things kids can’t do at his age.

Christopher is an only child and lives together with his father and his rat Toby. His mother died of a heart attack at the age of 38 two year ago Her death was very unexpected, especially because she was very concerned about a healthy lifestyle (Haddon, 36), and left a gap in the family. She attached great importance to literature (Haddon, 5) and social competences like friendliness and willingness to help , so that it might be difficult for her to have a child with deficiencies in social and communication skills. In some points she perhaps longed so strongly for Christopher behaving more normally, that she lost the connection to reality.(Haddon, 24)

His father often goes to extremes when demonstrating his emotions, occasionally blowing up in anger, and he lacks the confidence to work through his problems verbally. When trying to explain himself he stutters and stops and often has trouble connecting sentences.
I think Christopher is a reliable narrator, because he gave many details, and he was always honest on every action he did in the story.His story is always sharing his feelings and taking note of his father’s and neighbors are thinking.

ReplyDeleteChristopher’s personality is very different. Because of his disease his mind is not like the normal mind but in reality what is a normal mind? His personality is very confusing at times and he is a very curious boy. He tries to find everything out on his own especially with Wellington. “I decided that I was going to out what who killed Wellington even though Father had told me to stay out of other people’s business” (Haddon 28). Even though his father told him to not worry about the killer he did it anyways. He is very curious about the killer and determined to find out who the mysterious killer of Wellington is.
Christopher’s relationships with some of the other characters in the book are very special. The only family members that live in his house is his dad and his rat, Toby. He loves his rat and always lets the rat roam his room when Christopher is in his room. His dad tries to keep things from him. That is probably best for Christopher to not know some of the things that has happened but that bothers him. Something has happened to his mother and Christopher finds out that she might have had an affair that is why she is not around anymore, but his father told him that she died of a heart attack. When his mother was in the hospital, his father would not let Christopher go to the hospital. He told her that “She needs rest. She needs to be on her own” (Haddon 23). His father was trying to hide the death of his wife from Christopher. This shows that their relationship is very odd but special at the same time.
Christopher is an unreliable narrator because he never tells the other side of the story. He only tells his part of the story and the story does not always seem accurate. He is an unreliable narrator also because the stories that he tells do not always seem true or the full story. They seem like there are key pieces of the stories that are missing and that could affect certain things greatly.
Being a child with Asperger can be challenging for the child because they do not know that they have a disability. This is the case for Christopher, he excels in math and logical thinking, but when it comes to talking with people or being in public he does not know how to handle himself and loses control. There are many things that Christopher likes and dislikes. The color red is his favorite, “we passed 4 red cars in a row, which meant that it was a Good Day” (Haddon 24). This shows his logic, it may be different from the average person, but it works for him. This shows his logic in his head, but there’s a different side to him when he has to interact with people.
ReplyDeleteWhen having to meet new people or needing to interact with strangers, Christopher gets overwhelmed and shuts down. “I just watch them until I know they are safe” (Haddon 35). Describing how he acted around a new teacher at his school, Christopher avoided him and did not talk to him for weeks. Finally he gets comfortable enough to start to ask the person questions to get to know them. This is quite logical, most people try to figure how people act and then try to get to know them, it just takes Christopher more time than most. Does this create reliability though?
How reliable can a child writing a book be? Some say their innocence can make them the most reliable, not putting their own opinion into their writing. Plus in Christopher’s case, he cannot lie. His Asperger's makes it impossible for him to tell a lie, he must say things as they happen, that is how his reliability is shown throughout this book.

He is born with Aspergers Syndrome which makes him dislike yellow, brown, people touching him, shouting, and crowds. However he does like movies, tv, reading, and math. Christopher gets along well with Siobhan, dogs, and most strangers he encounters but his relationship with his family changes as the story continues. “I do not like people shouting at me. It makes me scared that they are going to hit me or touch me and I do not know what is going to happen.” (Haddon 4) and “I like dogs.”(Haddon 3) show good chunks of Christopher’s personality. Christopher’s personality also affects his relationships with other characters.
As mentioned before, Christopher gets along well with Siobhan who may be Christopher’s only friend, dogs in which he receives Sandy his golden retriever puppy, and most strangers he encounters as he tries to find a murderer and his mother. However, Christopher’s relationship with his family changes as the story continues. Christopher’s dad is loves him but can sometimes be mean, abusive and secretive. Christopher’s mother is nicer but can get annoyed with him at times. “ But Father didn’t let go, and he was shouting. And I hit him again.”(Haddon 83) describes Christopher’s home life. Is Christopher really telling the truth?

Christopher is the author of the book “The curious incident of the dog in the night-time”. He is 15 years old and has aspergers. Christopher is a really organized and smart guy. He likes to mom memorize a lot of things,he likes math, animals, and he likes the color red. Some of his dislikes are the colors yellow and brown, talking to strangers, people that lie, food that is touching, and when someone touches him. According to Christopher,“In the bus on the way to school next morning we passed 4 red cars in a row, which meant that it was a Good Day”(24). This meant that when he sees red cars it is a good day and when he sees yellow and brown cars it is a bad day. This are some more informations about Christopher.
Christopher has 3 people that he is really close to, his mother, his dad and Siobhan. He don’t likes the children at his school because he thinks that they are stupid. Christopher always talks to Siobhan when he does not understand something or when he needs help. According to him,”Siobhan says that if you raise one eyebrow it can mean lots of different things”(14-15). This shows that his relationship to Siobhan is really strong, because she explains him things when he does not understand something. He has really good relationships to people that are close to him.
I think Christopher is an unreliable narrator because he never shows emotions or his feelings during his story.

He also dislikes being touched and having people laugh at him. “I held up my left hand and spread out my fingers in a fan and we made our fingers and thumbs touch each other. We do this because sometimes Father wants to give me a hug, but I do not like hugging people so we do this instead, and it means he loves me” (Haddon 16). Christopher has another relationship with his father. He gets along with his father pretty well, but sometimes it is better to leave things alone than get involved. “And Father said, “OK, Christopher. I am going to say this for the last and final time. I will not tell you again. Look at me when I’m talking to you, for God’s sake. Look at me. You are not to go asking Mrs. Shears about who killed that bloody dog. You are not to go asking anyone about who killed that bloody dog. You are not to go trespassing in other people’s gardens. You are to stop this ridiculous bloody detective game right now” (Haddon 50). This quote explains how easily Christopher’s father can be angered easily. Even though the book is in his perspective, I cannot say that he is a reliable narrator.
Christopher is not a reliable narrator because he is not putting other perspective’s into view. He is also distracted and goes off topic all the time. He mentions why he does certain things, but it would not pertain to that point of the plot. “I decided to try and find out more about Mr. Shears. All the other children at my school are stupid” (Haddon 43). This is an example of how Christopher gets off topic.

Christopher is the narrator and protagonist of the novel. He is a fifteen-year-old and is mathematically gifted.He has difficult relationships with other people and he doesn't like to be touched. He is incapable of telling lies and He struggles with social acceptance and understanding because of his his Asperger's syndrome. He views the world largely in absolutes, dividing his life experience into a series of likes and dislikes. He feels most comfortable with logic and order.He processes information very differently and tends to remember little details due to his photographic memory. A perfect example of this is when Christopher talks about the approximately 61 holes in Mrs. Alexander’s shoes (Haddon 52). Along with his photographic memory he is also very literal. For example, when his dad tells him that he can not do certain things he does not do those but he finds away around it. Christopher runs through what his dad tells him not to do and decides that chatting with Mrs. Alexander would not be considered against any of those rules (Haddon 56)
ReplyDeleteI think that Christopher is an unreliable narrator is limited in his skills to describe people feelings, because of his disability: The Asperger syndrome. Therefore, he replaces informations about his own or people feelings with very objective reports of time, place etc. This fact isn’t really hard , because Christopher is the person, about we hear most in this book. Well, no one can say, which feelings he really has in, for the reader's emotional moments. In addition to that, Christopher doesn’t give false information, but he sometimes leaves out information, a “normal” author would give.

In the book “the curious incident of the dog in the night-time”, the narrator Christopher is a very strange, dissociable and captious 15 years old boy in my mind; However, he has a great mathematical brain. According to the story, he only likes a few things in his daily life, for instance, he likes solving or handling the problem on his own way, and he only likes orange squash. On the other hand, there are dozens of stuffs that he dislike, he doesn’t like being touched, he hates yellow things and he disgusts with people laugh at him. From the passage, “I do not like people laughing at me, so I turned and walked away” (Haddon 38). The quotation directly indicates how dissociable and odd that Christopher personality was, and proves his strange dislike. Christopher not only has a “special” personality, but also has a unthinkable relationship with his father.
ReplyDeleteChristopher always hard to deal with the relationships with other characters in the book, maybe because of his quiet nature, after his mother’s death, the relationship between Christopher and his father looks totally strange for an outsider. “I will not have that man’s name mentioned in my house” (Haddon 49). Christopher’s dad said. It is strange for a father and son talk like that during lunch time, even though Christopher is a 15 years old boy. For me, it looks like his dad try to hide something happened from Christopher.
In conclusion, Christopher is a reliable narrator in my perspective. How could a 15 years old lying to us? Throughout the story, he described all the people surrounded him and mentioned every details during his detecting.

He very like the dog and know very well about dog’s 4 emotional, he like the red color because it’s give him a good luck, and he like Maths so that’s one way that make him good at remembering things. “I am going to find out who killed Wellington”(20). From this quote, it’s show that he really like a dog and want to make a right thing to the dog. He dislike to lied to people, he doesn’t like yellow and brown color, he doesn’t like being touched or communicate with many people. “No, I did not mean to hurt the police. I just want him to stop touching me”(17). This show that he doesn’t like when someone touching him. In the curious incident of the dog in the night-time we meet Christopher, a by who is mentally handicapped with aspergers, which gives his personality a twist. His mother is said to have died of a heart attack 2 years ago which is hard for any 15 teen year old boy let alone someone with a condition like his who does not deal with emotions very well would be a little heartbroken over her death and not wanna talk to about it to anyone. His father is all he has left to take care of him and he does a good job until Chris disobeys him, then he over reacts and is very aggressive with his son, and physically abused him one time in the story.

And he also has colors that he hates like brown and yellow, “4 yellow cars in a row made for a black day, where I don’t eat and just red books in the corner and Take No Risks” (Haddon 24). He has a fear of people touching him which comes in outbreaks in the story whenever a someone touches him he responds with hitting them which in return gets him in trouble. When he eats the food can not be touching while it is on his plate but can be touching before it hits his plate.
I do not believe that he is a reliable source. He says that he does not tell any lies but also he admits to telling white lies, which is leaving out something from the event he is talking about. If he is leaving out parts from his accounts then what else is he leaving out? He also has this disorder that is hard for him to separate what is real and what is fake in his head. I would not count all of his accusations as truth because he is only telling it from his point of view.
The main character in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime is Christopher Boone. Christopher has a form of autism called Asperger’s syndrome. He is very smart in maths and in sciences. He also knows all the countries in the world and their capitals. He knows every prime number up to seven thousand fifty seven and is also very good with astronomy.

If he sees four yellow cars it will be a bad day. Christopher says in the book that his “mind is like a film.” I think this shows that he has a very good memory and he remembers everything. I believe that Christopher is a reliable narrator because he says that he never lies. I do not think he would be able to commit a crime like killing a dog and then make up a story to hide it.

ReplyDeleteChristopher is a very unique person with many different characteristics that really define who he is. He even has a many specific things or actions that he does and does not like. For example, he does not like the color yellow or brown, but loves the color red. He even associates those colors with items that have that certain color and that determined whether he liked that color or not.
ReplyDeleteAnother discomfort or dislike Christopher has is when is comes to dealing with people he has never met before. “Talking to strangers is not a thing that I usually do...I do not like strangers because they are hard to understand. It takes me a long time to get used to people I don’t know.”(Haddon 35) This really shows how Christopher is not able to grab the concept of emotions and personality traits within people he has just met. This makes it even more difficult for Christopher to communicate with others properly. I think that this is an important quote because it really shows us his view on communicating and understanding of people. Another thing that really brings out Christopher's personality is when he talks about wanting to become an astronaut. “To be a good astronaut you have to be intelligent and I’m intelligent. You also have to be someone who likes being on their own in a tiny spacecraft thousand of miles away from the surface.” (Haddon 50) Not only does he view himself as a very smart being, but with his own knowledge of his behavioral disabilities, a job like that would suit him perfectly.
Christopher is an unreliable narrator because he tells the story only from his own point of view. He is a 15 year old boy with certain conditions that prevent him from being able to convey other sides to the story. Because of his many behavioral problems, Christopher cannot simply tell a lie because he is basically not able to but, along with that point, we are only looking at the story from the viewpoint of Christopher who is not able to read or understand those around him correctly. This does not make him a totally unreliable narrator, in a sense that the entire story is false, but that the readers are only getting one portion to the entire story as a whole.
In the Curious Incident of the Dog in the night-time. Christopher, who is always focuses on the detail. And sometimes he has the different views for the common things. He told his father he want to find out who killed Wellington. Even his father doesn’t want he do that. If you read this book, sometime is hard to follow the Christopher step. I mean he always jumps around, that make people hard understand his opinions. Sometimes he focuses the stuff that is not very important, but he just describe it very well. He dislikes people touching and shouting him. He like red, because red brings luck for him. He dislikes yellow, because it is unlucky color in his mind.
ReplyDeleteThe two quotes I found in the book to demonstrate his “voice” are “4 red car in a row made it a good day,and 3 red car in a row made it a quite good day, and 5 cars in a row made it a super good day.” (24) He has different understanding from the normal, common view. And he hopes everyday is not so bad . And from “My memory is like a film”(Haddon,76), the author told us he has a kind of genius to find the truth of the incident. So he explain thing is very specific and particular. I think Christopher doesn’t mention he has any friends at school and he just talk about his father, Mrs.Shears, Mrs.Alexander, and Siobhan.
I think he is a reliable narrator, because he gives us more information that is specific and particular. Even some stuff he can’t explain very well by the words, and he just draws the picture for us. By the way, he is a very honest narrator, because he doesn’t know how to tell the lie.
Christopher John Francis Boone is a 15 year old kid from London with Asperger’s disease. He knows all of the countries and their capitals and he knows every prime number up to 7,057. His mother has died and he lives with his dad. His teacher and best friend is Siobhan. She is very good to Christopher and he likes her a lot. Siobhan encourages him to write the book, “Siobhan said that I should write something I would want to read myself” (7). This says that he needs help with things but is also smart enough to write a book.

Some things Christopher does not like are yellow foods, four yellow cars in a row, and when people touch him. When he sees four yellow cars in a row he considers that day to be a black day which is bad. He does not talk to anybody for the rest of the day and does not do anything fun. When people touch him he starts to hit. “I didn’t like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him” (8). This shows that he does not like to be touched by anybody and when someone does touch him he hits them uncontrollably.
I think Christopher is both a unreliable and reliable narrator. He is reliable because he always tells the truth and how the story is but is also an unreliable narrator because he does not know all of the story because his condition does not allow him to realize everything that is going on around him.

He likes to drink strawberry milkshakes, he likes doing math and think really logically. But he like color red, and if there are 5 red car pass by, he will consider that day is Super Good Day. He likes The Hound of the Baskervilles because it is a detective story.He love alone and quiet while he’s talking about the nature documentary called Blue Plant. “I am the only person inside it, and that is not connected to a ship at all but can operate under its own power and I can control the motors and move anywhere I want to on the seabed and I can never be found”(Haddon 80). As you can see he love science as well.
When he hit policeman because he doesn’t like to be touched, be asked to much questions at once, or talk with strangers. And he hate color yellow and brown especially yellow car passing by. “The next day I asw 4 yellow cars in a row on the way to school, which made it a Black Day, so I didn’t eat anything at lunch and I sit in the corner of the room all day and read my A-level maths course book”(Haddon 53).
The reason he’s unique is he’s different in both good and bad way compare to “normal” to nowadays world. He’s completely rely on the object he can touch and he can see, which give him the hard time to understand emotion such as chat with people or have physical contact. But the thought going through his mind is order and logical. He has his own interpretation to explain why he likes or dislikes things. As result I believe he is a reliable narrator because we can clearly see what is going on all the way through the story, even the things he doesn’t understand but as reader we can figure out what is going on and why people say things like that. “But Father interrupted me and grabbed hold of my arm really hard”(Haddon 82). Which he was surprised and doesn’t know why would his dad do it. But we as the audience we clearly know his dad is really mad. So I believe he is a reliable narrator.
ReplyDeleteIn this book, we can tell that Christopher has a really distinct personality. He organizes what he likes and dislikes clearly. He likes math a lot and has a good talent on it. He wants to be an astronaut, because he likes to be alone by himself. His personality is quite strong and his likes and dislikes also prove this idea. “It was nice in the police cell. It was almost a perfect cube, 2 meters long by 2 meters wide by 2 meters high. It contained approximately 8 cubic meters of air. It had a small window with bars and, on the opposite side, a metal door with a long, thin hatch near the floor for sliding trays of food into the cell and a sliding hatch higher up so that policemen could look in and check that prisoners hadn’t escaped or committed suicide. There was also a padded bench”(Haddon 14). He is describing what he saw at the police station. But one outstanding point is the way he describes. It is really mathematical and shows so many details. From those clues, Christopher is observant and can catch little things that ordinary people miss.
The other personality is trustfulness. It is shown well in the book, “I do not tell lies. Mother used to say that this was because I was a good person. But it is not because I am a good person. It is because I can’t tell lies”(Haddon 19). Because of that, he has sometimes hard time to have a conversation with someone.
Concluding all those things, I think he is an unreliable narrator. He see and understand things unidimensionally. So he could misunderstand what he understood and observed. Also, he has a strong subjective perspection so truths could be distorted. Those are the reason why he is an unreliable narrator.

ReplyDeleteIn The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, it is very easy to see that Christopher Boone is much different than other people. One might think it is because he has aspergers, but really without background information on the story, the reader would not know that he does have this disease because it is never actually is addressed in the book. Christopher just posses many different and diverse qualities, and has many unique relationships with others that make him the way he is.
Christopher has many personality traits, which almost contradict themselves. He is a very smart and bright, but is also clueless at the same time. He is amazing at math and knows every country in the world, but yet there are many things he knows nothing about and just cannot understand. He really does not like when people make fun of him, but he often makes fun of his peers and looks down on them. Christopher says, “the other children at my school are stupid” (Haddon, 44). He sees himself as smarter and more advanced than everyone at his school. Lastly, he is a very sweet and sensitive boy, but at the same time can be angry and insensitive. This sensitivity is shown in his love for animals and other people, but his anger comes out at points, like when he hits the police officer. Christopher has many character traits, good and bad, that show us what kind of boy he is.
Another component in analyzing Christopher's personality is looking into his relationships with other characters in the story. One of the main characters that he has a strong relationship with is his father, Ed Boone. It is easy to see that Christopher’s father loves him very much, and he really understands him and his needs. This is seen when his father comes to pick him at the police station. When he first arrives and sees his son, he “held up his right hand and spread his right fingers out in a fan. I held my left hand and spread my fingers out in a fan and we made our fingers and thumbs touch each other” (Haddon, 16). His father wants to hug his son, but knows that Christopher does not like being touched or embraced. There is one point where Mr. Boone is yelling at him and tells him to stay out of other people's’ business, and Christopher just stops talking because he respects his dad and does not want to anger him anymore.
I would say Christopher is a reliable narrator because he is very blunt and tells things how they are. He never tells a lie either because he thinks it is wrong and sees no point in it. Even though he may be young and naive, he still is intelligent enough to say and tell things as they appear.
Author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Mark Haddon, tells the story of Christopher Boone, a boy with Aspergers. Christopher is an interesting character and his mind goes beyond the average person’s. Christopher is highly intelligent but he lacks many social skills. Christopher enjoys things that are in order and make sense. On page 24, Christopher said, “...I like things to be in nice order. And one way of things being in a nice order was to be logical,” (Haddon). This may contribute to his lack of reading people because you really cannot predict what others do.
ReplyDeleteHe has a hard time speaking to others, especially strangers, and he struggles with knowing when he has crossed the line. He unintentionally makes others around him feel uncomfortable by doing things or talking about topics that some would consider inappropriate to talk about. For example, Christopher went to Mrs. Shears house to try to investigate more about Wellington’s death when his father already specifically told him to let it go and to stay out of other people’s business. “I could see that she was watching me and waiting for me to leave because I could see her standing in her hall on the other side of the frosted glass in her front door..I made sure that there was no one watching and climbed over the wall and walked down the side of her house into her back garden to the shed where she kept all her gardening tools (Haddon 31).” Christopher knew what he was doing was wrong because Mrs. Shears already asked him to leave when he was at her door and he even said that he had to make sure no one was watching as he snuck into her garden. Due to his inability to fully understand others, many would believe he is very unreliable.
I, personally, believe that Christopher is a reliable character because he tells things the way they are. He is unable to tell a lie due to, for lack of a better term, awkward personality. He sees the world in black and white and is very straightforward about life.
Christopher’s personality is a hard thing to grasp. Some days, Christopher will talk like crazy, be mad at someone, or just sit in a corner and not say a word. People around Christopher can tell when he has a bad day by the actions he portrays. A bad day to Christopher means that he saw yellow cars, and he hates yellow, but if he sees red, his favorite color, is a pretty good day. Christopher talks to Siobhan, his counselor, regularly about how he’s doing in life and gets some feed back. One day “I saw 4 yellow cars in a row on the way to school, which is a Black Day, so I didn’t eat anything at lunch and I sat in the corner of the room all day and read my A-level maths course book. And the next day,” Christopher explain and then continues, “too, I saw 4 yellow cars in a row on the way to school, which made it another Black Day too” (Haddon 53). Here Christopher is telling the audience what a “Black Day” consists of in terms of his actions, and it shows how it can continue for many days. Although times can be challenging for Christopher, he tries to overcome them in order to achieve his final goal.
ReplyDeleteRelationships with other people is how most of the world tends to strive in life. Christopher has very few relationships with others because he doesn’t trust people. The person Christopher trusts most is his dad, and although he gets frustrated with him, they both still love and care for each other in their own way. “The supper was baked beans and broccoli and two slices of ham and they were laid out on the plate so that they were not touching” (Haddon 48). Having his dinner prepared this way, shows that his dad listens to what he likes and dislikes and cares enough to put in the work to do this for him. Christopher makes the time to get to know people in order to feel safe, and this allows for relationships to develop and strengthen.
Most of the time Christopher conveys that he is reliable throughout the story so far. He tells the truth to everyone even though it might be rude. Some people might take Christopher as unreliable because of his condition. With his condition, people might think that he’s not that smart and doesn’t know what he’s talking about, but he does. Christopher is smart in many different subjects, like physics and math. Sometimes he is taken the wrong way, but he knows what he’s talking about and can help anyone.
Christopher is a unique individual, and it is not just because of his mental disabilities. He, despite being mentally handicapped, is extremely intelligent and can do things many other people simply cannot. These things include his ability to not tell a lie and always keeping his promises. His relationship abilities are not the best, and he states these issues on page 46, saying that he sometimes does not talk to people for a long time, then goes even deeper and says that he once did not talk to anyone for 5 weeks. He also does not like to remain in the presence of strangers for very long, as he gets scared easily. Christopher always seems to have only the best of intentions in mind when he makes decisions, as shown through his persistence to find Wellington’s killer. The way he goes about finding this information isn’t totally appropriate, and that is often what gets him in trouble, but he is no doubt a good person. Personality-wise, he is quiet, and he does not seem happy often because he very seldom smiles. He does find joy in things like mathematics, prime numbers, mysteries, and red cars. For all these things that he likes, though, there are things like anything yellow or brown, which he has a strong dislike for. Other than that, he, in his own special way, is like any other kid. We all have our likes and dislikes and personality traits, and while they may not be to the extreme that Christopher’s is, they still exist in all of us.
ReplyDeleteMark Haddon does a magnificent job of giving the perspective of a child with Asperger’s Syndrome. The reader is able to enter into Christopher’s thoughts and interpret them for what they truly are. Haddon demonstrates this ability when Christopher is talking about how he feels about strangers. Christopher goes very much in-depth on the matter, and asks very peculiar questions to new people he meets. “For example, when there is a new member of staff at school I do not talk to them for weeks and weeks. I just watch them until I know that they are safe. Then I ask them questions about themselves, like whether they have pets and what is their favorite color and what they know about the Apollo space missions and I get them to draw a plan of their house and I ask them what car they drive, so I get to know them.” The way he goes about this process of introducing himself to new people is very much different in itself, but the questions he asks are also very much “strange.” What this shows is his intricate thinking ability and how he struggles with the normal process of developing relationships. Another example is when Christopher returns home and his father asks him where he has been. Christopher simply responds, “I was out.” He then delves deeper into the matter, revealing that it was true, just not specific. He acknowledges that it is what is known as a white lie, where you tell the truth, just not the whole thing. What Haddon shows about Christopher here is that he is capable of being very deceiving, which is a prime attribute of a detective. Proving that Christopher isn’t a simply a pushover because of his mental incapacities is actually a very important piece in establishing him as a reliable narrator. He is a reliable narrator because of inability to lie combined with his love for a good mystery. He wants his reader to know everything, even if at times he shares a little too much information. He is very good at showing both sides of an issue, pointing out his flaws as well as other people’s. Haddon establishes Christopher as a reliable narrator through his personality and demeanor.

He is compassionate, and shows his passion for people or things. Christopher struggles with meeting new people because he struggles to sympathize.. For example, when he goes to different people’s houses to ask about Wellington, he goes to Mrs. Alexander. Mrs Alexander lives in house 30, which is on the other side of Mrs. Shears’s house. Christopher and Mrs. Alexander discuss Wellington and the possibilities of who might have killed him. However, Mrs. Alexander asks if she and Christopher have talked before.Christopher replied, “No. I don’t like talking to strangers. But I’m doing detective work” (Haddon 39). ReplyDeleteChristopher likes dogs because dogs are faithful and do not tell lies because they cannot talk. He likes reading, prime numbers, and loves problem solving. Christopher dislikes when people are shouting at him because he does not know the disciplinarian intentions. When Christopher is holding Wellington, Mrs. Shears is yelling at him about what has happened with Wellington and if he killed him. “Let go out the dog,” she shouted. “Let go of the f****** dog for Christ’s sake” (Haddon 4). Mrs. Shears showcases her strong personality and is not afraid to express her thoughts. However, Christopher does not like that, so he put his hands over his ears and closed his eyes when she shouts.
Christopher’s reliability to narrate accurately fluctuates throughout the book. A reason why he is reliable is because he is truthful and intelligent. Although he struggles with new people, he is still able relay information sensibly. The book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime is told in first person, it is told by a boy named Christopher John Francis Boone. Christopher has Asperger's which is a form of autism. Christopher does not like being touched by anyone, he hates loud noises, and he hates the colors brown and yellow. Some things he does like are dogs he said he loves dogs, “ because you always know what they are thinking. They have three moods. Happy, sad, cross, and concentrating”( pg.3-4). He also likes dogs because they are faithful, unlike other people that Christopher talks to. He also loves order, every day he counts the number of the same colored cars there are in a row; if there are 4 red cars it will be a good day and the more red cars there are the better the day it will be, but if there are 3 yellow cars in a row it will be a sad day.
ReplyDeleteChristopher lives with his dad, his mother had died about 2 years ago from a heart attack. His neighbor Mrs. Shears was the woman who owned the dog Wellington. Wellington is the dog that Christopher found dead with a garden fork jabbed in his side in the beginning of the book. Siobhan is a woman who helps Christopher with how to understand exactly what people mean when they say things.
Christopher can not tell lies he is always extremely truthful, this quality makes him a reliable narrator. He says exactly what he is thinking and tells it how he sees it. the fact that he tells it how he sees it can also make him an unreliable narrator because how he sees it may not be how it actually happened.
Christopher is a very smart savant with Asperger's. Chris is very nice person who sometimes doesn’t know social boundaries and can be awkward when he speaks to some people because of his inability to comprehend metaphors and other language. He has a close relationship with his father and Siobhan. He makes conversation with characters such as Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. Shears. This book is written in first person so Christopher says thing like “My memory is like a film. That is why I am really good at remembering things, like the conversations I have written down in this book, and what people were wearing, and what they smelled like, because my memory has a smelltrack which is like a soundtrack(Haddon,96).” This is an example of Christopher's brilliance because he can remember anything like it just happened. I definitely think Christopher is a reliable narrator because he is very honest and he has a perfect memory so he always knows what happened. On page 24, Christopher says, “I like things to be in nice order. ReplyDeleteThe personality of Christopher can be described as sensitive, observant, and smart. Things that Christopher finds favor in would be patterns, routines, and warmed up strawberry milkshakes. As we see in the book he always has a strawberry milkshake when he gets home and he always looking for patterns too. Christopher does not like the colors brown and yellow, being touched, and when people ask him a lot of questions too fast. We can see this in his incident with the police officer when he finds the dog dead. When the officer touches his arm and asks him too many questions he gets upset. In the quote, “Prime numbers is what is left when you have taken all the patterns away”(Haddon 15). We can see how everything Christopher does he looks for patterns. For example, in the quote he likes math so he looks for patterns in it. Also he has all of the utensils in the kitchen in a pattern too. This just shows that no matter what he is doing or where he is he likes things in patterns. We figure out the likes and dislikes of Christopher in the other characters that he interacts with.
Christopher does not interact with many people throughout his day. This is because he does not like big group of people. The relationships that Christopher has are with his father, Siobhan, and now starting with Mrs. Alexander. Christopher can talk to people but when someone pushes his limit he gets upset as we see in the quote, “I do not like people shouting at me. It makes me scared that they are going to hit me or touch me and I don’t know what is going to happen”(Haddon 4). As this quote explains whenever someone touches Christopher he gets upset and scared and he tends to hit that person. We can see this when Christopher has to deal with the police officer and Christopher starts hitting him because the police officer was grabbing him. Christopher is very honest and detailed to his readers about what he likes and dislikes.
Christopher is a reliable narrator of the story because he has aspergers. This causes him to be completely honest even when he does not know that he is. For example, when his dad finds that he is starting to do detective work again he tells his dad that he is doing it again without even knowing that he said it. So even if he wanted to lie to us in the book it would be very hard for him because his condition is making it very hard for him to do.
As a child with Asperger’s, Christopher may be considered unusual to some, if not all. His relationships, his likes/dislikes, and his personality are all, for lack of a better term, a bit off. He is a very picky person. Christopher likes things in his life to be, uncreative, simple, and honest. He really doesn’t like affection, jokes or anything that doesn’t seem to be practical or useful to him in his life. For example, when the cop asked on page 17, “‘Did you mean to hit the policeman?’,” He said in response “‘Yes.’,” (Haddon). Meaning Christopher did mean to hit the cop because to him, his brain told his arm to hit the policeman. But he did not mean to harm the cop in any way. Christopher just wanted the cop to stop touching him. He has a blatantly honest voice. His personality is very black and white and does not seem to have any sort of creativity inside. Christopher’s awkwardness can, in turn, affect his relationships with other characters.

They are unusual in the way that Christopher cannot seem to show any love or affection to anyone. For example, on page 16, Chris showed affection to his father by making their “fingers and thumbs touch each other,” (Maddon). This is his way of showing affection towards his father. He doesn't like touching or any other form of affection so using his hand is how Christopher shows love.
Christopher is a reliable narrator. The reason being is because he is unable to lie. He sees the world in black and white, and lying would make things too complicated for him due to his condition, Asperger's. Christopher likes things to be simplistic and stretching the truth or saying anything but the truth is too hard for him to do. He is a very intelligent individual, so you can expect for his facts and opinions to be well researched as well. Also since he is a kid after all, he tells things how it is. You can trust him to be as unbiased as it gets.

I think he is unreliable narrator because in the book he always have some strange idea, I can’t understand why he only wanna know how his mom died and not feeling any sad, so i think he is a unreliable narrator.
The personality of christopher isn’t let’s have fun type of deal, he is more of a serious type of person. Christopher is more get straight to the point and he wants to get it done, but he can also be someone that is also very curious. I look at Christopher as someone that is not only a serious person but he also very curious about what is going around his surroundings which tends to get him into trouble. Since Christopher is a serious person, he takes everything very serious but sometimes his curiosity gets the best of him. There are many likes and dislikes for Christopher, one of the many likings of Christopher are prime numbers “I decided to give my chapters prime numbers 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13 and so on because I like prime numbers”(Haddon 11). Christopher also is a very honest person and when he means something that’s what he meant such as when he hit the police officer because he didn’t like being touched so he hit the officer, he was being asked the question “Did you mean to hit the policeman?”(Haddon 17) Christopher doesn’t strike as the person to sugar coat anything at all.
ReplyDeleteIt can be a very difficult to chose either Christopher can be a reliable or an unreliable narrator due to the reason that sometimes he gets straight to the point, and others he adds information that is unnecessary. There are many parts of the story so far that show that he can be a little bit of both. There are many moments that although Christopher gets off topic he always says “ I can never Lie”.
In the book The curious incident of the dog in the night - time, Christopher Boone a fifteen-year-old boy who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, can be described as a sensitive, clueless and brilliant kid although he suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, He is still described as a very brilliant kid because of his strong love for math for example when he speaks to Mrs. Alexander about A Grade math he says “ I am going to A grade math next month, and I am going to get an A grade.” (Haddon 55) although he had said before “Talking to strangers is not a thing that I usually do...I do not like strangers because they are hard to understand. It takes me a long time to get used to people I don’t know.”(Haddon 35) he still had the courage to speak to Mrs.Alexander about the love for math that he has, even though she is a ‘stranger’ to him. Christopher also has a hard time showing other people love, for example he would show his dad affection by letting their “fingers and thumbs touch each other,” (Maddon 16). Because Christopher has always had a hard time showing affection towards his father or any other person, so this is a way he was able to show his father how much he really loves him.

Although some people may think he is a unreliable because he suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome and because he is a very young narrator.
Christopher has a very unique personality. He is a very good problem solver when it comes math and science but he does not understand how to act around the real world. If he gets himself into uncomfortable position he focus’ and blocks out the outside world completely He comes up with illogical reasons for things like if he sees 4 red cars in a row it is a Super Day and 4 yellow cars in a row is Bad Day. He does not follow directions very well and is often in trouble because of it. Haddon writes, “I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them”(8). Christopher does not know how to tell emotion and there are instances where he should be feeling happy or sad and he is not. Christopher's personality does affect his relationship with other characters.

His father knows what's best for Christopher but there are times where it gets tense. The fact that Christopher can not understand human emotion prevents Christopher from having being able to interact with other people.
I believe Christopher is a unreliable narrator because he views things the way he perceives them and not the way they were meant to be perceived.
In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Christopher Boone is a very special and different character. Having Asperger’s Syndrome, he tends to think very logically and does not understand the idea of emotions or empathy.He is also very cautious and wary of those around him, and will not converse or associate himself with people or surroundings he is unfamiliar with. He enjoys things that make sense to him, like math and problem solving. He dislikes seemingly random things like the colors brown and yellow, and will not eat anything that is one of those colors. He will not eat anything that is touching and does not like anyone touching him either. Christopher has a great memory, and can process his memories like a camera, able to rewind and pause his memories, so that he can see every detail of everything that happened to him. He is also very easily overwhelmed, for example when the police officer was interrogating him over the death of Wellington, and he could not keep up with the officer’s questions, and he explains how his mind is like a machine, saying “He was asking too many questions and asking them too quickly. They were stacking up in my head like loaves in the factory where Uncle Terry works. The factory is a bakery and he operates the slicing machines. And sometimes a slicer is not working fast enough but the bread keeps coming and there is a blockage. I sometimes think of my mind as a bread-slicing machine.” (Haddon,7) This shows how he processes things, which is very machine-like and organized.
ReplyDeleteBecause of Christopher’s incapability to understand emotions, his relationships with others tend to be very unstable. For example, his relationship with his father is very unpredictable. His father tries his best to accommodate Christopher’s many needs, but he can sometimes get very frustrated. Although he is patient with Christopher most of the time, he can occasionally be very volatile and hot-headed. Christopher has a hard time understanding what people are feeling and why they feel that way, which acts as a catalyst to his father’s anger.
Christopher is an unreliable narrator because he does not understand other's’ thinking processes, and therefore cannot explain both sides of the story because he only knows and understands the one side. He also is very unpredictable in his writing style, which also makes him a very unreliable narrator. Christopher writing style tends to be very biased, because again, he doesn't know any better because he doesn’t understand the mentality of others.
Christopher is a very interesting character. Now we all know he has asperger's syndrome but he is more than that. He is not the most social person in the world but he is a thinker and we can see this when he starts straying from his main point. He is very observant and analysis everything. We can see this when he is in the police car and Christopher says “The police car smelled of hot plastic and aftershave and take-away chips”(Haddon 17). Christopher has had a rough life, the person closest to him, his mom isn't there anymore and it feels he isn't extremely close with anyone. He says”I don't like strangers”(Haddon 19). Christopher is very interested in space but it seems anything he puts his mind to he excels at so this shows he is a brilliant character. He may be a smart character but I believe he is not a reliable one. Christopher is not a reliable narrator because whenever you're reading a book through someone else's eyes your going to only see their opinion and only see their reality. So he is not a reliable narrator because no one's reality is 100% the way it is.

In the book A Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time fifteen-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone is an extremely smart and curious boy with Asperger’s Disease who finds a dead poodle in a neighbor’s yard and decides to investigate its death. It is never specifically stated in the novel that Christopher has Asperger’s, but it is to be concluded at by the reader. He is shy and sensitive, but also honest and observant. His thoughts tend to go straight from his brain and onto the paper (which is supposed the book itself), “if I say that I actually had Shreddies and a mug of tea I start thinking about Coco Pops and lemonade and porridge and Dr Pepper and how I wasn’t eating my breakfast in Egypt and there wasn’t a rhinoceros in my room and Father wasn’t wearing a diving suit and so on and even writing this makes me feel shaky and scared” (Haddon 19).
Christopher knows all of the countries in the world, including their capital cities, and all of the prime numbers up to 7,057. He likes science and math, mystery novels, the police, prime numbers, his rat Toby, little spaces, Sherlock Holmes, outer space and much more. He does not like when people grab or touch him as can be seen in his relations with his dad. Sometimes they spread their fingers and have all of their fingers and thumbs touch, “We do this because sometimes Father wants to give me a hug, but I do not like hugging people, so we do this instead, and it means that he loves me” (Haddon 16). This shows how even though he does not like to be hugged, he is still willing to make other gestures that show his love.
Christopher also does not like lies. He cannot tell them. Some would say that this fact would make him a reliable narrator; however, this fact alone is not enough to make such deductions. Any story told in first person has an unreliable narrator due to the fact that the story is only shed light in the narrator’s perspective and is, therefore, biased. This makes any first person narrator unreliable.
In The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-TIme a young boy by the name of Christopher finds out that his neighbor, Mrs. Shears’ poodle has been killed with a garden fork. As a curious boy, Christopher decides he wants to do a little investigating and find out who the murderer is. Christopher is currently 15 years old who is a very shy kid. Christopher is organized, self-conscious, honest boy. He is extremely good at math and doesn't shy away from the truth. He hates the color yellow and brown, and has a strange way on how he decides his day is going to go about. With along with math Christopher loves and will only use prime numbers. But what Christopher dislikes are being around strangers, he is extremely uncomfortable being around people that he doesn’t know and hates eating at places that he is unfamiliar with. As only being a 15 year old he does not have a great relationship with any other characters including his neighbors. He is a reliable character because he was the one who is solving it on his own and experience this first hand.

This has led him to be in particular situations where he has felt inferior to others. He has to have everything in a certain order so he can fully comprehend the things that are going on around him. Christopher is excellent at math and has figured out every prime number up to 7,057. He dislikes the color yellow and brown. Although he may lash out at Christopher sometimes he is the only person who truly understands him and knows how to take care of him. An example of this is when Christopher gets let out of the jail cell, they put their hands together to show love and compassion. His mother is dead but did have a great impact on him. Everyone else who comes in contact with him just looks down upon Christopher.
The first quotation that shows Christopher’s voice is from page seven when the police officer is asking him a bunch of questions about Wellington’s death. After the police officer asks why he was holding the dog he says, “This was a difficult question. It was something I wanted to do. I like dogs. It made me sad to see that the dog was dead. I like policemen, too, and I wanted to answer the question properly, but the policeman did not give me enough time to work out the correct answer” (Haddon, 7). This quotation shows that Christopher understands what the police officer is saying but he needs more time to answer certain questions and has to have everything in a certain order or things will get overwhelming for him. The second quotation that shows Christopher’s voice is on page seventeen when the inspector is interrogating him and Christopher states, “I didn’t say anything because this wasn’t a question” (Haddon, 17). This quote is a prime example of how Christopher’s mind works because someone else in that situation may have said something else about Father but Christopher does not respond to anything unless it is in question form.
I believe Christopher is a reliable narrator because even though to some his stories or metaphors may be confusing it helps the reader to fully comprehend how he thinks and goes through life on a day to day basis.
The relationship between Christopher and his dad is a vital part of this book. Their interaction moves the story along and creates new problems in some cases. Three main events between these two are as follow: the interaction after the police station, the frustration talk about miss Shears and finally the largest one of them all the confession. As we dig deeper into the reactions and ways of communication we are able to understand the characters better and even obtain a sense of familiarity with our own lives or people we know.
ReplyDeleteIn the first scene takes place after Christopher’s interview with the police officer at the station. One their way back he apologizes for his dad having to come down to the station. Originally his dad seems understanding telling Christopher, “It’s Ok, just try to keep your nose out of other people’s business” (Haddon 20). But after the constant talk of the dog his dad gets annoyed and his mood shifts. By this rapid mood shift you can get the feeling that there something more to his emotion shift than just the Christopher's interest in the dog. Second, was the scene with the frustration of Christopher’s dad after he got back from his detective work, shows the dislike for mr. shears after christopher brought up his name as the prime subject. Because of the found information of the suspicion that his mom is not dead leaves us puzzling why Christopher’s dad does not lide mr. shears. Is there something behind it. This argument shakes up Christopher but does not keep him from continuing his investigation. Final the bid scene, Christopher finds letters written to him from his mother after reading one that explained why she was gone and left he got sick. Next thing he realized is that he is laying on his dad’s bed sick and he is coming up the stairs. Instead of totally freaking out his dad stop and did not speak then he sat next to him on the bed explaining why he kept his mom from him and that he was the one who killed the dog. The strength it takes to admit you were wrong is something that tells us how much he really does love Christopher and that he is a good father like the letters said. Christopher said nothing, how could he he just found out his mother is not dead and that the murder was his dad.
The confession was the last thing that drove Christopher away. Because of the lies and deceiving he ran away and now he is on his own trying to find his mother in london with no directions. Events in our life have a huge effect on who we are and how we act. You could say that the reason for Christopher's dad short temper was a result of being left by his wife.

ReplyDeleteChristopher has a pet rat, seems to drink nothing but strawberry milkshakes, and does high-level math problems in his head… for fun which is very odd considering no one likes math. He also has a disability which is Asperger syndrome. That makes his social interactions very difficult and uncomfortable. Loves red but hates yellow and brown colors. It is difficult for him to communicate with other characters due to this disability but still finds a way. Relationship with his dad is very bad considering the dad can not deal with it especially with his mother dying. He also makes everything a game for example, “ 4 red cars in a row made it a good day, and 5 cars in a row made it a super good day,” (Page 24). Another that demonstrates his voice is, “I don’t like to be surprised,”(Page 82). I think Christopher is a very reliable narrator due to the fact that he is very detailed in everything he does. He gives a lot of information, which made things easier for me to not have to go on the internet and read what happened. As a reader I have really enjoyed this book so far due to the detail the book has to offer.

Christopher is a very particular individual. He has a quite corky personality. For example on page he says on page 2, “My name is Christopher John Francis Boone. I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,507” Not many people can say this about this themselves. It is a very unusual talent to possess. Then he goes onto say, “Prime numbers are what is left when you have taken all the patterns away. I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them.” This quote shows the way Christopher thinks. It is easy to tell right away that he is special and different than everyone else.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that separates him from others is his difficulty to decipher facial expressions. He just simply can not make out what their face means. In order to help him figure out these faces, he would use this sheet of paper that Siobhan gave him full of facial expressions. He would pull the paper out whenever he did not understand what someone's face meant and compare the paper to his face. He seems to be quite close with Siobhan. Christopher seems to have very few relationship like these which might be another one of his corks.At this point Christopher is seen as unreliable narrator because his story seems to be very one sided.

ReplyDeletewho is an unique person who is different from the majority in society. His personality is not what most people are used to. He loves logic, math, physics, and memory. He has dislikes that half way make up what he does with his time. Those dislikes are hating being touched where he will turn to violence, the color yellow and brown, and people who lie. Haddon says, “If a strange man touched me I would hit him, and I can hit people very hard...when I punched Sarah because she had pulled my hair I had knocked her unconscious”(34). People do not recognize that Christopher has Asperger's, and do not know how to handle the given situation where he is involved compared to others’ situation. He is different with whom he spends time with.
Christopher has a different relationship with himself, to whom he trusts,and to strangers.
He trusts his dad and his teacher, Siobhan, because they know how to handle the
situations and prevent him from going into hysterics. They avoid touching him unless
it has to do with the spreading of the fingers and touch hands. They teach him what to do if he is going to into hysterics, like counting to 50 with the cubing of each number. Haddon says, “And after I’ve taken A-level maths I am going to take A-level further maths and physics and then I can go to university”(45). Haddon writes, “Siobhan said that when you are writing a book you have to include some descriptions of things”(67). Haddon also writes, “...and he laughed. I don’t like it when Rhodri laughs at me. Rodri laughs at me a lot”(66-67). The differences in the quotes show his different personalities of how he acts around himself which is calm and logical. His trusted personals he feels safe and can know they are not going to hurt him. Around others, he feels nervous, does not know what they are going to do, does not like new situations that he will not know the end result of.
Christopher is a “unreliable” narrator because he fits the categories of one. He only
shares his side of the story and how he views life. He does not incorporate anybody else’s perspective on the way they feel about life or his situation. He may not always be accurate in handling problems well that he may feel like went week because of his mental state. He may not be trustworthy because he would not be able to keep a secret; if someone asked him, he would tell the truth because he can not lie. These characteristics of Christopher makes up who he is and how he views life, that many people will never experience or relate to.
Christopher hates being touched by other people. The color yellow and brown do not agree with Christopher, but has somewhat of an affection with the color red. He loves prime numbers because there are no patterns between them. He has a hard time depicting what people's facial expressions are. “I got Siobhan to draw lots of these faces and then write down next to them exactly what they meant. I kept the piece of paper in my pocket and took it out when I didn't understand what someone was saying. But it was very difficult to decide which of the diagrams was most like the face they were making because people's faces move very quickly.”
ReplyDeleteHe did not like trying to recognize people's faces. They moved too quickly so it was hard for him to try and decode what people were feeling. Eventually he got rid of the card in his pocket because people's faces moved too quickly. Christopher was not completely obliterate to what people were feeling. He knew what a sad and a angry face looked like, they just came in many different forms. Christopher had good relationships with many people, and the people who understood Christopher helped him with what they were trying to say. His teacher was a huge help in his life because she drew faces and wrote down exactly what they meant so Christopher did not have to guess.
Christopher Boone is not your average kid. Christopher has asperger's which is a mild form of autism. This is never directly said in the text but we know this from our pre read knowledge. Later in the book Christopher says,

You also have to understand how machines work and I’m good at understanding how machines work. You also have to be someone who would like being on their own in a tiny space-craft thousands and thousands of miles away…”(Haddon 50) I would say this relates to his disability because his social skills are very poor but it leaves him gifted in math
Another thing is that Christopher does not get humor. He does not get sarchasm either. His condition makes him think very literally.
“This will not be a funny book. I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them.” (Haddon 8) This also shows that Chris is very aware of how his mild form of autism affects him.
Christopher Boone appears to be a normal boy. He is 15 years old and dreams of being an astronaut. However, he is quite peculiar. Christopher knows things that most children do not: all the prime numbers up to 7,059 and even all the countries and their capitals. Of course there are aspects of Christopher that are quite normal. He is obsessed with space and everything in it, he loves dogs, and he even loves to play video games. He is incredibly smart, however people do not realize that because they cannot get past the fact that he has asperger’s. Of course, he is more than his disorder but it does hinder him in the real world. Christopher freaks out when somebody touches him. Haddon shows Christopher’s reaction to being touched, “The policeman took hold of my arm and lifted me onto my feet. I didn’t like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him” (8). However, hitting was not meant to hurt anybody, it was just meant to get them to let go. There are some other differences too. He will not touch or eat anything yellow or brown. He also cannot tell lies and keeps all his promises. This may seem weird, but to Christopher, this was his normal. However, these things do impact how he interacts with other people.
ReplyDeleteThe two main people in Christopher’s life are his father and his teacher, Siobhan. His father is a single dad, working a job, and taking care of Christopher and his needs. He is juggling all these things, so his stress level is pretty high. His fuse is very short with Christopher because Christopher pushes the limits without realizing it. Since Christopher has asperger’s, he cannot tell people’s emotions or infer what people mean. This is the biggest communication error between him and his father. However, this does not hinder the love between them. Christopher would do anything to keep his father from being angry. An example of this is shown by Haddon, “I could tell he was angry because he was shouting, and I didn’t want to make him angry so I didn’t say anything else until we got home” (21). Christopher always wants his dad to be happy. However, this is very hard, so sometimes he just stays quiet to avoid conflict. On the other hand, Siobhan is the very opposite. She doesn’t have a short fuse with Christopher. She encourages him in ways that improve his character. She wrote out faces and emotions to help him understand people and even encouraged him to write a book. Christopher finds it easy to talk to her because she understands him, and not everyone does. These relationships cause Christopher to have different views of people than how other would see them.
Taking into account everything about his personality, I would say he is an unreliable narrator. Of course he never tells a lie, however he does have most characteristics of an unreliable narrator. The book is only told from his point of view, which causes a skewed view for the reader. Christopher is not like other people so in this novel it is very hard to grasp what other characters are thinking or feeling because Christopher cannot decipher emotions. In the end, Christopher is a great person, just an unreliable narrator.

The book of The curious incident of the dog in the night-time is seen through the eyes of Christopher, the fifteen year old genius narrator who suffers with Asperger's syndrome. All events are processed through his remarkable mind.

Personality wise, Christopher seems to be very sensitive, He does not like people laughing at him, but Christopher has no problems being mean to other people. “And this shows that sometimes people want to be stupid and they do not want to know the truth.” (Haddon 139.8) Christopher likes prime numbers, because to him they are all what is left when you have taken all the patterns away. Prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them. My name is Christopher John Francis Boone. I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,507. (Haddon 3.1) Christopher doesn’t seem cocky or arrogant, to me he seems confident and proud.
I believe that Christopher Boone is a reliable narrator. Mostly because he does not tell lies and speaks his mind, knowing that it could get him in trouble. But he is a narrator that will confuse many readers. It toke him a while to comprehend that his mother was having an affair, while many other narrators would have caught that in an instant. He seems to live in his own world and not understand the reality of the world, so he is in the middle.

Christopher John Francis Boone, is a 15 year and 3 month and 2 day old boy with aspergers. He likes red cars, prime numbers, and mystery stories like Sherlock Holmes. He has a dislike for yellow and brown cars, being touched, and lying. His is a very organized teenager that is limited because of a disease which makes it hard for him to read other people's emotions. He is very one sided and likes his opinion which makes him an unreliable narrator. Even with limitations he is still a very curious boy that is trying to solve a curious incident of a dog in the night time.
Christopher has a very fascinating personality. He likes red cars and lets them decide how his day goes. For example, “Mr Jeavons, the psychologist at the school, once asked me why 4 red cars in a row made it a Good Day, and 3 red cars in a row made it a Quite Good Day, and 5 red cars in a row made it a Super Good Day, and why 4 yellow cars in a row made it a Black Day” (Haddon 24). This shows how organization affects his day. For some people the weather controls how there day goes for Christopher how many red or yellow cars the bus drives by determines his day. The reason the colors of the car's matters to him is because he likes how organized the colors are. Sadly, being human he has to have human interaction and he gets confused easily and aggressive when he gets touched or talked too. The book shows this on page 8 when it says “The policeman took hold of my arm and lifted me onto my feet. I didn’t like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him.” (Haddon) He ends of hitting the cop very hard and gets put in jail temporarily for assaulting an officer. He does not understand that he is doing wrong and it gets him in big trouble. This is his personality though and people need to be understanding.
Christopher has a very single minded personality with spurts of compassion then moments with lots of cockiness and attitude. He is a teen so he is going to be difficult at times no matter what. Although when his behavioral problems are added in he becomes very hard to deal with. Some of his behavioral problems are on page 46 and 47 “D. Screaming when I am angry or confused, G. Groaning, K. Not noticing when people are angry with me, M. Saying things that other people think are rude” (Haddon) Christopher has a big heart though! He loves dogs, learning math at school, the truth, and his dad and rat. The best example of his big heart and pursuit of truth is on page 3 and 4 “I like dogs. You always know what a dog is thinking. It has four moods. Happy, sad, cross and concentrating. Also, dogs are faithful and they do not tell lies because they cannot talk” (Haddon) Christopher's big heart leads him to do great things and write a book about a murder of a dog like Sherlock Holmes. He is narrating his book but because he is very straight forward he does not understand the other peoples point of view and he ends up being an unreliable narrator.
He is not a reliable narrator because he says it himself that he cannot read other people's emotions which is very important. He is only able to describe his view of the story which is sometimes hard to understand because he jumps around a lot. He does have Siobhan to help him write it though which is very nice of her and she is his friend. He also has his dad and Mrs. Alexander to support him. He is surrounded by good people that want to help him be the best. He is writing the paper and if he cannot add in other aspects from what other people say then he is not a reliable narrator.
